Peter Max Art Game
Ready to liven up your elementary art curriculum with no prep, Pop Art projects? This Peter Max art lesson will boost student confidence and creativity. Kids will be inspired by his psychedelic paintings of hearts, flowers, planets, and stars. Moreover, they’ll connect with how he combined his love of astronomy and art in his paintings.
And, it’ll help time-starved teachers like you create lesson plans based on Pop Art artists like Peter Max.
During this art project, your class will discover how Peter Max was inspired by 60’s and 70’s pop culture. And, they’ll learn 6 ways to create the illusion of deep space. Students will create a heart drawing with colored pencils using the step-by-step guide and PowerPoint.
Plan lessons for students about contemporary artists and art appreciation in a way that excites them. Finally feel confident in your art curriculum and be organized and prepared to teach art!
What’s Included In My Pop Art Lesson
Can I be honest with you? Art history can sometimes be boring for kids. There, I said it. Teaching about artists and cultures doesn’t have to be a snoozer, though!
I’ve designed 3 different ways for students to attempt this Peter Max drawing project. All will engage kids to create! Choose which way works best for your classes:
- Roll a dice game to add randomness to your student’s artwork
- “You Pick” art worksheet for kids to choose their own elements
- Digital spinner wheels, so kids can randomly pick elements and you can integrate technology in the art room
- Printable dice template in case you have no dice
- Step-by-step picture directions to guide students through the art process
- Drawing practice worksheet, for kids who want to sketch out their ideas
- Peter Max Artist biography about the life and work of this eclectic American Pop Art painter, so you don’t need to research
- “Big Ideas” reflection worksheet where students write about their art process
- Self-assessment worksheet so kids can think about how they performed during the project
- Art grading rubric which assesses expectations, craftsmanship, work habits, creativity, and clean-up
- 8 “I CAN” Statements aligned to the Studio Habits of Mind to use during instruction or post on your bulletin board
- 4 Art exit tickets with quick, thought-provoking prompts
- Art history coloring pages to keep kids inspired by Peter Max’s hearts outside of the art room
Ways to Use My Peter Max Art Project
This Peter Max lesson plan is flexible and can be used in many ways throughout your art room and beyond. It’s great for maternity or emergency art sub plans, early finisher activities, and even for virtual art class or an after-school art club.
You Will Receive
- 1 Non-Editable Printable PDF (Peter Max Heart Art Project)

Why You’ll Love It
These are perfect for sub plans or when we have those strange days and teachers drop their students off late or need to pick them up early. My students beg for these art games.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Any excuse to use dice- LOL! No, but in all seriousness, this is the second lesson I have bought and my kids loved it just as much as the first one. It gives them the guidance they do still need, but the freedom to roll the dice makes them feel completely independent. Thank you for such great products!!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have very little experience/knowledge of Peter Max and his artwork. This seems like a great introduction for both me and my students! I love that these activities ensure that everyone’s art ends up a little bit (or a lot!) different and unique in the end. Thank you!

I am using the same review I have used on some of the other lessons I have used from this creator. The art teacher at our school was out of the building for 2 weeks and I was in charge of getting lessons for the substitute. These are easy to follow, use materials easily found in the art room and have great content! The sub even loved them and said she learned something new every time she taught the classes

Fabulous resource for a veteran teacher that’s new to the art room. I’m excited to use this with the kids in different ways. What a GREAT way to introduce artists to the kids! I plan to show them a PowerPoint of the artist and some of their works, and then have them play this game.
