Chinese New Year Coloring Craft
My build a lantern coloring craft and writing prompts are the perfect, no prep 2024 Chinese New Year activity for elementary. 3 templates ensure that every Lunar New Year lantern activity on your bulletin board is unique! Post your Chinese New Year crafts and prompts in the hallway to make an engaging lantern festival display.
If you’re racing to figure out what festive project to quickly put up in the hallway for the Chinese Lantern Festival, look no further. Students can complete the craft part in one class period. And you can use the accompanying writing prompts to post alongside your projects.
Basically, each child receives a copy of the lantern template. Then, they color everything, cut out the parts, and glue it together. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!
This Chinese New Year craftivity also comes with a PowerPoint with step-by-step pictures and simply written directions for young children. Use it for either whole group or small group instruction. Or, assign it to students via Google Classroom, Canvas, etc. so they can work independently.
Are you going to be absent and your substitute won’t have access to technology? No problem! Use the 1-page all-in-one step-by-step picture directions. Just print it out and include it with your sub plans. And then do nothing. Yes, nothing, because I’ve done it all for you!

Totally worth the price! I created a Google Slides presentation that included a video of the Chinese Lantern festival. I think the video added the touch for more of the excitement. I had my students decide which lantern to choose (that was a struggle for many). They enjoyed creating the lanterns you have in this resource. I added the step by step instructions as an independent activity in Google Classroom. Thank you!

Excellent resource for Lunar New Year. My students enjoyed making the lanterns and everything was very low prep. I showed them some videos about the Lunar New Year and they were able to complete the writing prompts just fine. I supplemented with a mini lesson on compare and contrast and this was the perfect, fun activity that we will leave up for Open House.

These turned out great for our Chinese New Year exhibit we did as a school. The kids enjoyed drawing and writing. Would love to see a writing page without a prompt added for those students who write more than one page. Thank you for creating and sharing.
