Victorian House Drawing Game
Ready to ignite your middle school art curriculum with an engaging, step-by-step architecture art project? This Victorian house drawing lesson will boost confidence and creativity. It’s the perfect intermediate art project for Fall or Halloween. Kids will be intrigued by the oddities in Victorian homes like stairs to nowhere!
And, it’ll help time-starved teachers like you create lesson plans based on architecture of the 1800’s.
During this art project, your class will learn about Victorian architecture, space (elements of art), and how architects combine forms. Use it to teach watercolor and colored pencil mixed media techniques. It works great for drawing creepy haunted houses, too. Students will create a Victorian house drawing using the step-by-step guide and PowerPoint.
Plan lessons for students about architecture and art appreciation in a way that excites them. Finally feel confident in your art curriculum and be organized and prepared to teach art!
What’s Included
Can I be honest with you? Art history can sometimes be boring for kids. There, I said it. Teaching about artists and architecture doesn’t have to be a snoozer, though!
I’ve designed 3 different ways for students to attempt this Victorian house drawing. All will engage kids to create! Choose which way works best for your classes:
- Roll a dice game to add randomness to your student’s artwork
- “You Pick” art worksheet for kids to choose their own elements
- Digital spinner wheels, so kids can randomly pick elements and you can integrate technology in the art room
- Printable dice template in case you have no dice
- Step-by-step picture directions to guide students through the art process
- Drawing practice worksheet, for kids who want to sketch out their ideas
- Victorian Architecture handout, about what is architecture, the rise of Victorian era architecture, and the various house styles during this time period, so you don’t need to research
- Victorian Houses handout, showing the difference between Gothic Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, and Queen Anne home styles
- “Big Ideas” reflection worksheet where students write about their art process
- Self-assessment worksheet so kids can think about how they performed during the project
- Art grading rubric which assesses expectations, craftsmanship, work habits, creativity, and clean-up
- 8 “I CAN” Statements aligned to the Studio Habits of Mind to use during instruction or post on your bulletin board
- 4 Art exit tickets with quick, thought-provoking prompts
- Art history coloring pages to keep kids inspired by Victorian homes outside of the art room

I used this with a powerpoint that I created about Victorian Houses and it’s features. I didn’t use it as a game due to covid, but it was handy having the paper so the students had ideas to go with.

We’ve done several “house” lessons in the past ….However, I believe this lesson will aid those students who struggle with adding the necessary details.
