Studio Habits of Mind Posters
Tap into your student’s critical thinking skills with these 8 Studio Habits of Mind art room posters for middle school. Created by Harvard researcher, Lois Hetland, the Studio Thinking framework represents best practices for art students and educators. These Habits mirror what working visual artists do to succeed.
What’s great is that you can teach the 8 Studio Habits of Mind (SHOM) in any order at any age level. Additionally, they’re effective for both traditional teaching methods as well as TAB teaching (Teaching for Artistic Behavior).
Use these signs in your instruction by assigning classes to focus on one Habit during their work time. For example, one lesson can be centered on learning to blend paint better (develop craft). This will help students think about art as being process-based, and not product-based.
This 8 Studio Habits of Mind poster pack ties in well with any art curriculum, too.
I designed these art room signs with a bright, rainbow marker look. They’d look great in any elementary or middle school setting. Also included in this bulletin board set are borders and letters spelling out, “Studio Habits of Mind.”

I really love these posters. Unlike a lot of resources that focus on Studio Habits of mind, these ones break down the language visually in a way that helps me as an educator make the meaning clear to students. Key words are in a different color so we can hone in on that language. I frequently choose one or two and point them out as our focusÑ because we spend so much time defining what these look like, students are more easily able to know what they are learning. The visual provides a great cue, and something to help us continue to grow! These are also more colorful than most posters about SHoM, and that means it’s an even better cue for when we are switching up our focus. Extremely satisfied with this product. Thank you for creating these.
