Description
Digital Garden Gnome Art Project
Do you need a creative and engaging spring craft that will work for both your virtual and in-person students? This Google Slides art project requires no prep and includes a writing component to tie literacy into art. Your class will feel successful in building their own digital garden gnome. It’s as simple as copy and paste! Additionally, it pairs well with the books, “A Gnome Story: Adventures with Murphy McWoo” and “The Garden Adventures of Griswald the Gnome.”
Are you stuck figuring out what to do with students who finish early? Digital art projects make for great early finishers activities because they take up no space, paper, or other physical materials. Simply assign a handful to your students for the month and stop fretting over projects for students who complete work fast.

Overview of Digital Build a Spring Gnome for Kids
First, your students pick a pair of pants. Then, they’ll copy and paste it onto the gnome builder slide. From there, they’ll add shoes, a coat, arms, a head, and a hat. Each clothing item comes in 6 – 9 different colors, therefore the possibilities are endless! Alternatively, overalls or a dress is another option. Next, they’ll paste their gnome into one of the background scenes. Lastly, your class will add some fun extras like flowers, garden tools, mushrooms, or a gnome home!
And, if you’d like to take it a step further, have kids take a picture of where their garden gnome is outside their home and have them insert it into the background instead. Use it as an opportunity to teach them about composition and lighting. This art project is also a great exercise in teaching about overlapping and depth in terms of space.
These digital build a garden gnome templates include 169 moveable graphics for your students to decorate their own spring gnome. Step-by-step directions are included at the beginning of the Google Slides document to teach your class how to flip an image and change the order of images to bring something forward or backward, as well as how to group objects.
