How to Use the Fan Deck
- This interactive fan is a great idea generator. We want students to think divergently, meaning there are many solutions to the same one problem (whatever that artistic problem is). Even glancing through the deck, you’ll see there are some designs that are similar, but not the same. Use these as conversation starters.
- If you’re doing a lesson that involves pattern, for example a Zentangle project, have students share the deck. Or even if you’re working on a sculpture or ceramics lesson and a student needs an idea to add to their work, use the deck for ideas.
- This design doodles fan deck makes an awesome fast finisher activity. My students were required to have a sketchbook in class. If they finished a project early, they could work on something of their choosing. The deck makes a handy free-draw option.
- If you’re a TAB (teaching for artistic behavior) teacher, this is a wonderful resource to have in your lessons. It’s a great vehicle for self-exploration and to encourage student experimentation on their own terms.
- For upper elementary art teachers, this deck would work well for center activities. Give the group using the deck a theme and have them create a piece of art using patterns based off the theme.
Frequently Asked Questions About This Design Doodles Interactive Fan
- Why use an interactive fan? We all know upper elementary and middle school kids can sometimes get flustered understanding how to draw patterns. Or even how to come up with ideas for new doodles. This give them the structure they need to freewheel ideas for their own art projects.
- How many sheets of paper does this use? That depends if you choose to print it one-sided (34 sheets) or two-sided (17 sheets). I give more specifics in the PDF download about why I chose to make it one-sided.
- Who is this designed for? I designed this for art teachers.
- What grade level is this for? This resource can be used for 2nd grade and above. But it may be most advantageous for middle schoolers.
- What materials do I need? Cardstock paper is preferred for durability. But regular copy paper that’s been laminated would work, too. You also need a hole puncher, book binder ring, a paper cutter, and scissors. Alternatively, you could cut it all out by hand.
