Art Critique Worksheet & Group Activity
Make art critique activities and art criticism more engaging with my “Give Me the Scoop” worksheets for elementary students! Your classes will develop their visual art vocabulary while learning to discuss artwork constructively.
The peer art critique method is effective in evaluating famous artworks first, then their classmate’s art projects.
How to Use This Art Critique Activity for Elementary Students
This art lesson is designed for flexibility and can be carried out for peer critique one of two ways:
- Teach a full class group art critique using famous art. Each child will complete one ice cream scoop critique. Then, they’ll cut it out to make the ice cream sundae with the whole class. Use as many bowls and spoons as needed.
- Give your kids the full or half page worksheet and have them critique their classmate’s artwork. In this scenario, they will respond to all 3 art critique questions on the worksheet.

Why Evaluate Art with Group Critiques?
Peer art critiques:
- Lead to helpful suggestions to improve the art-making process
- Develop critical thinking skills
- Help students reflect on their strengths and weaknesses
- Increase observation skills in order to provide constructive feedback
But how do we bridge that gap in the elementary art room when we’re working with kids who often display a fixed mindset about their abilities?
The best way is to begin with learning to critique famous pieces of art first. In that scenario, the critique becomes more objective than subjective. Once they are familiar with doing these types of artwork assessments, then move on to peer critiques. These can be done in two ways: individually or in groups.
This resource is aimed at teaching students to peer critique. That’s the end goal. But it can also be used to discuss famous pieces of art, too
