Description
Digital Gingerbread House Art Project
Do you need a creative and engaging Christmas activity that will work for both your virtual and in-person students? This Google Slides art project requires no prep and includes a writing component to tie literacy into art. Your kids will feel successful in designing their own digital gingerbread house. It’s as simple as copy and paste! Additionally, it pairs well with the book, “The Gingerbread Man” fairy tale.
Gingerbread Activity for Kids Preview
Overview of Build a Gingerbread House Craft
First, your students will pick a wintery background to place all their gingerbread house parts onto. Then, they will select a house to design. There are 9 options to choose from. Next, kids will pick windows and a door and resize them as needed. Then, they will add in snow, a chimney, trees, wreaths, and other decorative elements made from icing. Lastly, your kids will add all the candy treats on and in front of the gingerbread house.
And, if you’d like to take it a step further, have kids take a picture of where their gingerbread house is located and have them insert it into the background instead. Use it as an opportunity to teach kids about composition and lighting. This art project is also a great exercise in teaching about space and overlapping as well as order of operations (first, second, third, and so on).
These digital gingerbread house templates include 200 moveable graphics for your students to decorate their own house. Step-by-step directions are included at the beginning of the Google Slides document to teach kids how to flip an image and change the order of images to bring something forward or backward.
A Note About Christmas Activities
While some kids celebrate Christmas, others don’t. This resource was intentionally designed to work for all students. Depending on your current circumstances, you may opt to do one of the following to best meet all your kids needs:
1) Send the document as is. Some parents don’t mind their child having to sift through the graphics that also include holiday options to get to the winter-themed items.
2) Copy the entire slide deck, rename it something generic, and remove any graphics that your student’s parents might find off-putting

The download contains a two-page PDF with directions on how to access the templates. And this document comes ready to go in Google Drive, so don’t worry about trying to figure out how to import it into your Drive!
